Harold
Late one Thursday evening a black and white cat was rushed in after being hit by a car. It was quite clear that Harold had not been neutered (most people know how strong the smell of a Tom cat can be). Harold's attention has been focused on a pretty Persian across the road. Without thinking about the dangers of the speeding cars because his thoughts were elsewhere he had a terrible accident.
His injuries were mainly confined to head. The bone in the roof of his mouth - the hard palate, was split. He was confused, bleeding from the nose, gasping for breath and very shocked. We did all we could for him and did not have much hope. After a couple of days he seemed well enough to risk anaesthetic and take some X-rays. We discovered that Harold had an unusual fractured jaw as well as his injured mouth. His worst symptom was an inability to control his urination and despite the X-rays we could not see any damage to his pelvis. After inserting a catheter and some special nursing Harold began to hit eat a little on his own and make a good recovery.
I have related Harold's story to remind everyone particularly at springtime that entire male cats are obsessed with chasing females and fighting each other for territory. Any road sense they may have learnt is forgotten and ignored. Life is safer for a neutered cat.
